Gibson Guitar Company developed and began selling electric guitars in 1928. In the early 1940s Les Paul invented the solid body guitar.

In late 1940s Leo Fender sold the first economically sucessful solid body guitars, the single pickup Esquire and the double pickup Telecaster.

In 1950 Gibson was the first to mass produce an electric guitar the Les Paul.

In 1953 Fender introduced the mass produced and world famous Stratocaster.

These three guitars the Gibson Les Paul, the Fender Telecaster, and Fender Stratocaster are still the most popular and most played electric guitars in the world today.
