It is believed that the modern guitar is a descendent of a 11th century Latin guitar from Spain called guitarra which had four strings, a flat back and one hole for sound. Some experts believe that the guitarra was preceded by the cithar which was brought into western Europe by the Romans around 40 AD. It is also believed that the Romans may have brought the cithar from Greece which in earlier times called it kitara. The kitara is believed to be derived from the sithar from which has come from old Persia. I can see where they tie these musical instruments together. The names are very simular from empire to empire. Which if you think about it logically as it traveled from the past to the future each preceding empire created a simular word in their own language to describe it. Also the fact that in acient history Greece conquered Persia and then the Romans conquered Greece helps add weight to their theory.
